GLP-1s and the Proactive Care Model: Treatment Meets Prevention

A PROACTIVE CARE model requires a balanced view of both prevention and treatment, especially as new therapies emerge. GLP-1 medications show meaningful benefits in weight loss and cardiovascular outcomes, making them a valuable tool for certain populations. However, they should not be the starting point of a health strategy. Instead, they should complement broader efforts focused on lifestyle, behavior change, and early intervention. Relying solely on medication risks addressing symptoms rather than root causes. Organizations should prioritize engagement in nutrition, physical activity, and overall metabolic health before conditions escalate. At the same time, they should thoughtfully integrate effective treatments when appropriate. This dual approach supports better long-term outcomes and more sustainable cost management. Recent research reinforces this perspective, showing significant weight loss and reduced cardiovascular risk with GLP-1 therapies, but less consistent impact on quality of life (Nong et al., 2026).
