The Missing Link in Behavioral Health ROI: Physician-Led Psychiatric Care

Having a unified, holistic behavioral health strategy is imperative for strong population health and overall wellness. Without fully integrated, physician-level psychiatric care, any strategy is inherently lacking. A key metric for evaluating the value of a behavioral health provider is the number of physicians available to care for the population. This is critical given the complexity of managing antidepressant and antianxiety medications, including the need to appropriately escalate treatment or safely wean patients as conditions improve. Caring for the brain is highly complex and requires the highest level of expertise. Without that level of care available to all members, care is incomplete, and the potential return on investment is diminished. This need is reinforced by research showing that antidepressant withdrawal effects may be more common and severe than previously understood, particularly with long-term use. Among individuals taking antidepressants for more than two years, 63% reported moderate or severe withdrawal symptoms, with some lasting longer than three months (Horowitz et al., 2025).
